Dr Who In The Classroom

Again, another great article on Derek Bruff’s ‘Teaching with Classroom Resposne Systems’ blog.

Here he discusses taking the topic of taking attendance with your classroom response system - how to get round the fact that some students see these ‘Are You Here’ questions as Orwellian and some way of monitoring.

He advises against attendance slides and suggests the approach of asking an easy opening question, maybe on pop-culture or something topical happening in the local area, school etc.

This got me thinking on the practicalities of creating these questions. Is it this something everyone is prepared to do every  morning and/or every class?

One way of making this easy is to pose and create questions on-the-fly. This requires almost no preparation – it maybe something you see on the news the night before, something you hear on the radio on the way to work, something you read in the paper or hear in the staffroom.

Here’s one of the top of my head, which I got from reading in the paper this morning:

What do you think of the new Dr Who

  1. A – Like
  2. B – Don’t like, he’s too dowdy.
  3. C – I have never watched one episode of Dr Who and so do not care
  4. D – Dr Who?

As a Dr Who fan since childhood (watching Tom Baker reruns on public television), I really like your warm-up question!

For the record, I like the new Dr Who. He seems to have the same sense of style as Tom Baker’s Doctor.
